The quality and promptness of care is terrible. The majority of the medical staff act like they hate their job and the support staff is worse. You need a family member there 24/7 to stay on top of things. Extremely slow in doing test. For example, one test thst was ordered "stat" took several days! Lots of wanna-be doctors ( ie PA's) running around. I've been to a lot of hospitals and this is one of the worst.

The nursing staff on the cardio unit was excellent. The problem is the social workers. After heart surgery, the patient was sent to a rehab that was more of a nursing home. Physical therapy was once a day if lucky. Problems developed. A second procedure was necessary. Cardiologist told us the patient should have been in an acute rehab. This was never suggested by the social worker. In fact, we were never told that it was an option. Why? It was ASSUMED by the sw that insurance wouldn't cover the stay since patient didn't have a head injury or trauma. After second procedure, the same thing happened, but armed with the cardiologist's news about what type of rehab patient should be in, family insisted on trying to get patient into acute or subacute rehab. SW (a different one--seems they all are trained to not even try for something if they think it won't be covered--that is NOT patient advocacy) insisted it wouldn't be covered and rehab wouldn't take patient. And she was wrong on both counts. (insert a few choice words here--this whole thing could have been over in 4 weeks--we're now going on 6) So if you end up here, make sure you've got someone outside the system who's able to advocate for you. The social workers aren't on the patients' side.

My husband had the misfortune to be taken by ambulance to this hospital after feeling sick at a meeting for work. The hospital was almost two hours away from our home. They kept him for 5 days and were so slow in taking the tests needed. When they were finally taken it took another day or so just to get someone to read the reports. They thought my husband might have a carotid artery and after at least 5 tests still werent't sure. My family came to pick him up on a Sunday since we live far away and the discharging doctor let us wait for more than 4 hours in the room waiting for her. She still hadn't come and after such a long time, we left him in the hospital all because he needed a note saying he could go back to work. The rudest doctors work there although the nurses were nice to my husband. They didn't communicate well and as his wife knew nothing what was going on with their findings. They need to take a lesson on how to run a hospital from University of Pennsylvania Medical and get on the ball.
