I see a lot of classic addict/alcoholic excuses and criticism of this program. They hated it because it made them do things they didn't want to do. If they wanted easy, they need to go to Malibu. Stopping addiction is hard work and not pleasant. the staff at COPAC were great, I had good daily one on opne counseling and grew to really enjoy big book studies. I got a lot out of the program and I was a 10 year heavy narcotic user when I went there. The staff was professional and went I had a detox relaterd medical emergency they took care of me immediately. Great place, don't listen to the other whiners on this page.

I went to COPAC in 1998, and am sorry to hear that it continues to utilize the same insane techniques. While there, I saw clients subjected to the infamous "rebirthing" technique, where individuals are placed under pillows and encouraged to go through a simulated birth--now debunked and responsible for the death of a teenager. When I had a seizure, the nurse would not allow another patient call the ambulance, and a housemate had to sneak the 911 call in. The place was debasing, non evidence-based, and should be closed down.

The place is run down... The buildings were literally flooding. There were also numerous holes in the walls. When patients complained the staff did nothing to fix it. The quality of care was awful. We were sitting around for more then 2/3 of the day. When questioned, the staff told me I was suppose to interact with my peers. This was suppose to help rehabilitate me. There was absolutely nothing therapeutic about this however. It was just like socializing with friends in the real world.. Except these friends were all addicts. If anything, it was doing the opposite of what they told me it would do. The staff for the most part was friendly. This was a plus. If you ever complain they will just throw it back in your face, however. You can never be right. They don't listen to reason at all. They also stole a lot of my things when I checked in. They told me they were sending it back home, but they didn't. They did send some things back, but I was missing about $100 worth of vitamins. Another patient said they stole some money out of his wallet as well. Promptness was awful. They were horribly understaffed. I had to fight to get one on one time with a counselor. I NEVER saw a doctor the entire month I was there. When I complained about a toothache, it took them 2 weeks to get me a dentist appointment. It took 5 days for them to get me some ibprofin even though I brought some with me. You can't hold on to over the counter medication, vitamins, or supplements. They hold all the medicine you bring in with them. They dispense the medicine 4 times a day. The nurse that does it is almost always late. Overall it was an awful experience. I learned next to nothing, lived in a run down piece of shit house, was almost always ignored by staff, had things stolen from me, and lived with a bunch of people who had no intention of quitting drugs. This place is a joke. Don't go.

I have been to other treatment centers. This is by far the worst. They discriminate against women, the staff is undertrained, and they use mind control to really mess with these patients. You recieve horrible medical care, and they constantly threaten you and your family. It is a money hungry BUSINESS, not a loving-caring rehab treatment. I rank it as the lowest of low. Dr. Gordon should be ashamed of himself.

It was almost 27 years ago when I first walked into COPAC, with Dr. June, and the rest of the staff. If my memory serves me correctly, I see several of the group are still on staff. One of the items that still sticks in my mind, was when we broke into groups of four, and a bunch of facts were laid out. The bottom line was that in five years, only one of us would be clean and sober, and I believe it was said one would be dead. I looked at my table mates, and said sincerely, "I sure do feel sorry for you guys!" I meant it. I had reached a point in my treatment where I would do what ever it took to stay sober. I know there was a point where if my counselors had said, "Walk over that cliff!", I would have done it, because I knew it would only help me to stay sober. Over the years, I've seen some of the ones I went through the program with, and several had fallen by the wayside. But when they talk about the program ruining your drinking, it sure seems to, because almost to a person, I've seen them get up, dust themselves off, and start all over again. Has sobriety been a bed of roses? No. But it's a hell of a lot better than being drunk, or wasted. And it isn't the easiest thing anybody has ever done. But the rewards far outweigh the effort. So, with that in my mind, please extend my deepest grattitude to the entire staff, and let them know that there are people that do make it over the long run. I wish words could express my deep heartfelt thanks I feel for this program.

Worst experience of my life. I got clean and sober but it was in spite of the program here. Most "patients" were kids and not really into recovery. After 26 successful yers in recovery I did have a relapse so I went to Copac. I do know what recvery looks like and this place was not it. If you are considering this place save your money. If you are there now leave.

No drug treatment center is perfect, but COPAC is just downright unsafe. Roaches have infested the facility and the place would miserably fail a health inspection. The medical staff could be described as incompetent at best. When I was a patient at COPAC the nurses ignored a fellow patients pleas for medical attention and the man suffered a stroke as a result. The place isn't cheap either and COPAC has no shame when it comes to financially "raping" their patients. Absolutely no consideration in this regard. Overall a very unprofessional and dangerous place. Stay away it could be your life.

Hey--any center has good intentions..usually run by people who care. I'm not sayin these people didn't care but they don't tailor their programs to individuals. My understanding is that COPAC started as a center for addicted medical professionals. So, when I had real problems in another medical prof. program, they sent me to COPAC to help. Problem is that COPAC has since become a center for the thug sons of professionals. I was roomed and had to be treated with kids that were just horrible and not serious. They traded meds, etc. Copac's philosophy seemed to be less is more. THe facilities were generally filthy and unsafe, and just nasty. I was forced to go 'shopping' to learn skills like cleaning etc. Now, that might be good for a teen, but having two kids, trust me, I know how to shop and clean. Additionally, there were at least 3 fistfights that broke out among the thugs. They were just horrible. Copac didn't offer very much in terms of individual one on one, and while there for a month, only spoke like twice to my counselor. The rest was just stupid groups. I finally got a handle on my problems, but it wasn't due to anything COPAC did for me. DOn't go there...
