I was there for the adolescent program. Rude staff, group therapy is an absolute joke. Just a bunch of useless worksheets you can easily find online. The doctors only see you for not even five minutes a day. This place made me regret not over dosing.

The technicians were completely unprofessional. One stated that he would rather beat his kid than send him to a place like this. I took it to mean that if us children just got "beat" or "spanked" we wouldn't be in this mess. He also said us kids have the easiest job in the world,"Just get good grades, listen to your parents, and don't do drugs." He said it in way that basically stated that every adolescent there, was there for that reason. They put us there with 25 other mentally unstable kids, with a whole lot of different backgrounds. We're stuck in there, with hardly anything to do, so you can imagine how that's like. Drama, and arguments start over anything. Kids with social anxiety and depression do not mix in well with anger management kids and hyper activity kids.

My 10 year old was given a pill to make him goto sleep, permission given by doctor not the parent. It made him forget an entire days events and took 5 people to wake him up the following morning. No one takes the time to answer questions, phone calls are rushed or not returned. Staff curses at children and when a parent brings it up the topic is blown off saying it couldn't have happened although several children are telling their parents the same thing. In stead of the doctor taking time to discuss my child, he copped an attitude and released him on the spot but without the meds he put him on which I have read and been told should not be stopped suddenly. When I asked what the reprocussion of that could be he said nothing it would just leave his system, later I researched and found out it could give my son seizures. They do not educate and answer questions adequately. This is not acceptable behavior from the staff. No child should be threatened with a shot in the butt to make them goto sleep as a fear tactic. I am very dissatisfied with the staff, and will be informing Medicaid that the doctor withheld his medication at discharge. FYI if you do further reading on the web you will find they almost lost their ability to accept Medicaid once already. This is the lowest hospital on the mental health totem pole.

Holly Hill Hospital didn't help me at all. I was admitted on October 26, 2013 due to suicidal thoughts and bulimia nervosa. The food was horrible, the beds were uncomfortable and my skin started breaking out because the beds were unclean. The floors were filthy, and someone OCD like me would go crazy. They diagnosed me with something different from the first time I went there from the second time which was November 10, 2013. They have me on 14 medications and I'm only 19 years old. They were late giving us our meds half of the time, and sometimes they ran out of the meds I needed. The doctors only talk to you for five minutes a day. You get more help from your peers then you do the workers. The workers don't care about the patients at all, besides two people I met there. (big thanks to Kamal, and Mrs. Kay) I was on unit 1 East. I had at least 6 anxiety attacks while I was there and they wouldnt give me my anxiety medicine. My heart rate was 147 and they didnt care.

DO NOT send ANYONE to Holly Hell. As a "patient" in their young adolescent "program", I am more traumatized from going there more than anything and did not receive any help at all. I was treated like a criminal instead of a person with actual problems. You are ordered to sit in a dayroom all day and only come out to eat, like a caged animal. There was fights from patient to patient constantly and the staff was very very inconsiderate and super rude. One of the patients was complaining her ankle was hurting and one of the employees walked away from her and ignored her, mumbling that the patient was a "F'ing actress". They were very unprofessional and the hospital was covered in filth. Out of the 5 days I was there, I only went outside 2 of the days for no more than five minutes.I recieved almost no one-on-one time with a therapist or doctor. And barely no "group time" with the other patients there, either. It would be a shame if anyone is sent there, ever. It is not a place for help, more for felons

My child has been in Holly Hill since March 19th. I was not able to go with her when she was transported due to the fact that I have 2 other kids at home. I called the hospital 4 times over 6 hours to try to find out any information, like did she arrive safely, how she fared, etc. When I finally got to speak to her, she was distraught and scared. Evey day I speak with her and she tels me about the fights that have occured, the fact that they just sit in the day room most of the day and barely go outdoors. She injured her shoulder a cpouple of days ago, and no one bothered to call me or x-ray her shoulder. She told me that she had asked for Motrin 2 hours prior to our telephone call and still hadnt been given anything. She also told me that the staff failed to give her one of her pills. I will be going to visit her tomorrow, and if the place looks as bad as the reviews say, i will remove her and take her to another facility. I have been reading reviews and out of 19 reviews they only got 2 good reviews. This is VERY concerning to me. It makes me wonder if she will be safer at home.

Holly Hill Hospital was a nightmare. I would not recommend this facility to anyone! The staff are not consistent with the staff from shift change to shift change. No one person can answer legitimate questions accurately. There were days vitals were taken twice and others that were taken 4+ times...that is not consistency. I am referring to 1WEST. The place is filthy. There is violence among patients it is a very unsafe environment. Rules to not seem to be applied at all. Some days patients don't even get to go outside. And when there is outside time available it is no longer than 15 minutes. There was never more than 1 (ONE) group session per day that leaves countless hours of doing NOTHING. Coloring books for children...crayons. NO BOOKS, nothing but puzzles, games and TV. This is not therapy in any fashion. Men and women intermingling makes for an uncomfortable environment. Counseling was never more than 10-20 minutes with the doctor..that seemed short and not sweet. $1000 a day gets you what exactly? The food was of poor quality the facility was dirty and the staff was inattentive.

upon having a panic attack(an event you'd think the staff of a MENTAL HOSPITAL would know how to deal with), I was told by one of the incompetent "techs" that I had to calm down and stop crying or they'd keep me there longer. In general, the teen patients were treated more like delinquents than patients. It was as if we'd done something wrong by being depressed and seeking help, and this was the punishment. My doctor saw me only probably six times in the nine days I was there, for no more than five minutes in most cases. I entered the hospital with a gaping wound on my arm from a suicide attempt which was covered pretty poorly by two bandaids. The tech who performed my routine full body inspection made no reference to it. after a nurse finally saw it, she told me I should get stitches and they'd get a doctor to do it. The doctor didn't come for at least another two days. When she did she told me it had been too long, and if I wanted stitches they'd have to re-cut the wound first.

I was admitted here for depression and suicidal thoughts and held at holly hills for six days. The doctors truly not seem to care about you and only see you as a walking bag of money. I would only see my doctor for maybe two minutes at best each day and if I had a question to ask him, he would immediately run away. The staff could never remember my own name and why I was there even though I was there for so long. Your sessions with your therapist are only about 45 minutes each day and are not very helpful. The phones that the patients are aloud to use are basically unusable because of all the crackling. Most of my time spent here was reading a book or watching tv. I got more help for my depression from the patients then I did from anybody at holly hills. Please do not send your loved ones here.

PLEASE DO NOT use this facility. I had to have my husband admitted for alcohol detox last year; I took him in on a Thursday we arrived at 9:00 am; we were finally seen at 1:30 pm; he went upstairs at 3:30 pm. I was adamant that I wanted to speak with a doctor before any medication or treatment was provided as my husband was in no condition to consent to anything. No one ever called me. I made repeated telephone calls to the facility at all hours of the Thursday night and Friday; no one would tell me what was going on with my husband other than the fact the HE consented to 72-hour hold. Knowing the condition my husband was in, I know there was no way he understood what he was signing. I was able to see him on Saturday. When I arrived he was in a wheel chair - he was so heavily medicated he could not walk. He was unresponsive when I spoke with him; almost in a coma-like state. I demanded to speak with a doctor and was promptly advised that the doctor would call me. I was NOT allowed to take my husband to an emergency room. I instructed the personnel to NOT give him any more medications and that I would be back at 5:00 pm. At 4:00 pm I received a call from Wake Med ER that my husband had been brought in by Holly Hill for evaluation. When I arrived at the ER, he was STILL heavily medicated and still wheelchair bound. He had to be admitted and stayed in Wake Med for 3 weeks. He had to endure physical therapy rehab to regain the ability to walk. It has been almost a year since this has happened and he is still not 100%. I realize that some of his problems are the result of his alcoholism, but the "treatment" he received at Holly Hill did NOTHING to help his situation; in my opinion, it was a major contributor!

my daughter was in in sunday and i have yet to get a returned phone call from a nurse, worker, doctor, no one! Supposed t visit her on saturday but they have not even called me back about that? I have spoken to her once because no one answers the phone and when you do call, they severe unprfessionalism and lack of education in how to answer a simple phone call with respect paints a bad picture for anyone to be brought to this place. If you have a family member in this place, its hard enough as it is but to not be contacted, educated or treated as a human? waste of time when my kid could be getting better somewhere else.

Holly Hill was a great experience for me. I was only 13 at the time, and was dealing with severe cutting, depression, and suicide attempts. I was at first scared of what would happen, but most of the staff was completely supportive. There is care and support 24/7, and there are 15 minute checks where a nurse comes around the rooms and checks on the patients. They never prescribe medicine for minors without asking a parent or guardian, and the doctors are very skilled. I met so many incredible people there also. I have always had problems with late night anxiety attacks, and 2 workers there sat with me and made me feel better whenever I got one. I would recommend Holly Hill to anyone who is struggling with anxiety, depression, abuse, addictions, cravings, eating disorders, and any other mental health issue. Holly Hill was definitely a life changing experience for me. c:

If at all possible do whatever you can to avoid this hospital for yourself or family members. My spouse was admitted here in January based on a recommendation from a medical doctor. Right from the beginning they made us wait over 3 hours in a small waiting room before anyone came to check her in. Once she was admitted they had absolutely zero communication with me the entire time. I had to constantly call them for updates. It was impossible at times to even get in touch with someone. Numerous times the phone would ring well over 20 times before someone would answer. And on a couple occasions someone would answer and then hang up immediately. During the second day they were already asking her to make payments based on how long they thought she would be there. They had just placed her on medication and were already trying to get money from her. They made no effort to contact me. When I did finally get to talk to the doctor it seemed like he wanted to keep her there longer than she needed to be. I had no doubt they just wanted more money from us. The conditions there are terrible. The walls and floors were very dirty. It was the worst atmosphere I’ve seen for people trying to recover from mental problems. When she was admitted I was given a sheet that had the visiting hours listed. I drove 30 minutes one night only to find out that the visiting hours were wrong. The receptionist told me that she asked them to correct the sheet months ago. I also saw these same hours posted on a wall inside the visiting area as well. When I was able to visit or call my wife she told me that she was very scared and could not sleep at night. I couldn’t get her out of this place fast enough. I can stress enough to avoid this place.

I spent one week in holly hills and they managed to completely destroy my life and my sanity. As long as I live, I will never forgive them for what they did to me. Every day I was forced, against my will, to take massive doses of medications that I didn't need, which made me psychotic and enabled them to keep me longer. Dr. Mezzaglia then proceeded to diagnose me with Bipolar disorder - I have depression - and give me unsafe, unresearched antipsychotics like Zyprexa. As there is nothing I can legally do against them, I can only wish them the punishment they deserve in Hell.

Was isolated, put in a room to sleep most of the day or in front of a TV. Very little counseling and questionable advice at that! Absolutely no follow up from staff later. Not so much as a phone call. On top of all this, they were asking for payment before I was even released!! Very unprofessional place. I would never recommend it if there is an alternative place you can go.

My Daughter has been there 3 times because as an adolescent with medicaid in the area there was no place else to go. The staff treat you as if you are a criminal and after my daughter being there for almost three weeks the staff still said WHO? when I called... Sad.

My experience at Holly Hill was as positive as one can be for an inpatient hospitalization for depression. The day was well structured, the staff were helpful and friendly, and I definitely felt like they cared about me well-being. I also want to add that they do have a day/partial-hospitalization program. I saw that this site says they don't. I went there after my discharge from inpatient, and that was very structured and helpful as well, kind of like a step-down program before you're completely on your own. Unfortunately, I had some issues recently and had to go to a different facility, and it was HORRIBLE! If you live in this area and need help, I would definitely recommend Holly Hill. Stay away from Winston-Salem!
