Details:

Are you aware that Baycrest Therapy Center, what used to considered a good place for referral, has recently become a questionable place to refer family members and patients to? We put our mother in Baycrest Therapy Center after Dr. Hobson did a complete shoulder replacement at Bay Area Hospital on Dec 20, 2012. She went into Baycrest on the 24th. Baycrest failed to schedule transportation and the family had to pay Bay Cities Ambulance to transport the patient. Dr. Hobson provided and sent along with the patient a fresh wound dressing and instructions to change the dressing when she arrived at Baycrest. The family noticed her wound dressing had not been changed, notified one of the administrators, and expected it would be done. Finally after getting upset and standing at the front desk for quite awhile the family got someone to change the wound dressing, but not before the 9th day at Baycrest. Then the family noticed their mom had not been showered since her arrival either. It took many trips to the Administrator's office, the Social Services office and hounding everyone before they finally showered the patient. Then she went another week without a shower. On more than one occassion the family caught the staff claiming to have given their mom pain meds when in fact the charts showed they had not. When this was taken to the Adminstrator's office, she merely said those responsible would be punished. I told her I did not like that word and thought it went deeper than one particular person. The family inquired about follow up with surgeon and primary care physisian and Baycrest assured them they would take care of it. Finally the family made the appointment with the surgeon, Dr Hobson. The center had called in an assistant to her PCP but she had not looked at the patient's wound or inquired about anything medical. The phone system was down the entire month our mom was at Baycrest and it was impossible to reach anyone. As we live in Bandon we had to drive to Coos Bay to speak with anyone. We went everyday to see our mom but sometimes questions came up after we had left, especially during the time they of her release. Spending much time each day visiting and observing our mother's care we couldn't help notice the neglect of care for other patients as well. Mom's room mate was given pain meds that she couldn't reach and she was given food that she couldn't eat as she had a choking problem. Some of the nurses were accountable, professional and friendly while some seemed to hate thier job and anyone around them. Once I walked by an office where the door was left open while one Administrator shouted chatisements at another Administrator (who shouted excuses right back). When asked by our outpatient therapist how we liked Baycrest Therapy center, we told him and he said he had heard similar complaints recently and just didn't know who to refer his clients to now, that it used to be a good place.
