As someone who has been to most of the detoxes, and rehabs throughout NYC, I firmly believe - and always recomend (I know it as 'Smithers') Addiction Institute of New York. They were the ONLY one which does not shove the 'A's' (AA/CA/NA, etc.) down your throat. As someone who never believed in either religion (which they always say 'you don't have to be religious. Actually, you DO, in order for this methodology to work), nor a 'higher power', I never got 'it', and in this methodology, it's the 'fault' of (in this case, me) for not 'believing', or 'trying hard enough'. I'd be dead, if I continued down that route. I (personaly) proscribe to what's known as Rational Recovery, and here, they encouraged me - and anyone - to find what's BEST FOR THEM. If you, or a loved one needs help, give them a chance. The only thing you've to lose is yourself. Or - GAIN yourself, back

Details:

This hospital was really, really mediocre. (I am being kind.) I brought my elderly mom there for rehab (alcoholism) and anxiety. There were a few very dedicated (ridiculously overworked) people who tried to help but otherwise there was literally no care, it was a dingy, horrible facility with no natural light, inedible food etc., and virtually no therapeutic activities that I could discern. For four days no one came to take her to a 12 step0 meeting (!!!) and she had no therapy, nothing. No one seemed to care how she was and she deteriorated. The doctor we had was an imbecile and the nurses seemed to ignore his directives; there was zero communication among members of her medical team. A terrible experience. She was placed on the 5th floor (the Asian floor) but maybe it is different on the 3rd floor (the subtance abuse floor). Payne Whitney is WAY better. (She was there 5 years ago.)
