I completed treatment at Malvern Institute and had a wonderful experience. The staff at Malvern helped me understand the disease of addiction and helped me set up my foundation to find meaningful recovery. I found the small groups very informative and staff genuinely concerned for my well being. I had an insurance issue and I was going be dropped from treatment, but the staff interceded and fought to get me more days. I honestly do not believe that I would be sober today if I didn't have the education and care that Malvern Institute provided.

We tried to get my husband in for detox and it was a joke. They didn't care unless you could shell out cash up front. From the other reviewers this sounds like a blessing in disguise. One time my husband called and he said it sounded like he was breaking up a party. He was promised return calls and never received them. A girl who's name began with an "A" was absolutely no help and lied and everyone sounded scared of a certain supervisor. At this point I wouldn't even send my dog there. Horrible and don't bother.

The individual councilors are quality people but on several occasions had admitted openly to being overworked and understaffed much to the detriment of the patients. There is no day time security and often their own policies are not followed. In the course of one week drugs were brought in on three separate occasions and distributed among the community. They have one Psych for 80 patients and even though they are an accredited dual diagnosis facility do not go there if you wish to have any personal psychiatric conditions (ie PTSD, depression, anxiety etc). There is no fitness center and there is a great deal of free time in which the patients have nothing to do except smoke, walk in circles around the building or play volley ball if you are into that sort of thing. The only one on one treatment you get consists of two half hour sessions a week. Their nursing staff is over burdened so imagine two nurses in one med line trying to get sleep medication for 80 patients. I was grateful for being able to detox and break the cycle however almost 14 days without sleeping and having requests ignored for a change in sleep medication is not conducive for productive mental health. Many patients had also reported that they were directed to exaggerate the nature of their addictions so the insurance companies would keep patients longer. I would recommend this place for detox and would only recommend a full thirty days if your ONLY problem is addiction as they are not equipped to truly work for personal issues outside of that. Furthermore personal possessions that were checked in would often be misplaced if not flat out lost. The building is extremely outdated and the staff had admitted that there would often be septic issues if the place was at full capacity. Be extremely wary and prepared to advocate for yourself if your needs are not being met. If they can admit that they are understaffed then it is easy to imply that the patients can't have all their needs met and rather than take fewer patients and offer better care they choose to keep the place as packed as possible. Good luck to anyone that has serious addiction issues and even though the place is lacking in several ways it's better to be clean in there then to continue to put yourself at risk by going out to use.

my son is seriously depressed and I believe using opiates to self medicate after being diagnosed with depression, anxiety, ocd and I am throwing in a sleep disorder due to it all. He had continually told me he hated this place so much and just wanted to come home! Little did I know how desperate he was to get out that he cut himself superficially and had to go to a crisis center onto a mental pshyche locked facility! for 10 days only to say I just wanted to come home and had not been taking my meds for 2 months! So yes he was not thinking logically, but the counselor and doctor did not listen to my warnings that he was very depserate also and not safe at all. I am now still trying to get his personal belongings! almost a month later and he has no id, no phone, no clothes, no ipod, no meds that he personally brought there to show what he had been taking! the list goes on and on! I will be talking again or I should say leaving another message for the therapist and the man in charge of the safe, but then I will be calling an attorney. Theft is extremely high 2nd day his 50 $ phone card stolen from inside his dresser drawer staff refused to do anything and review the tapes from the camera outside his door! He was moved from his room with a mirror for safety and then moved into a room the next day to another room with a mirror which he broke and cut himself with..... My son was NEVER a cutter and thank god it was superficial and he thought it was a way out. I do NOT recommend this rehab. I am sure they are caring individuals but unfortunately it has gotten lost manangement doesn't seem to exist at all.

My Ex-husband has been to this facility multiple times while we were still married and I was carrying him on my medical insurance, IBH. They did not help him with his issues and I believe they were only picking him up to collect the insurance money. He had two separate stays at the Transition House, which is located in an old motel. He loved it there, but it didn’t help him one bit. During a three month period in early 2011, he would go on a binge and when he wasn’t able to get out to get his drug of choice, he’d call up Malvern and they would send a driver over 50 miles one way to pick him up for detox. They would detox him and take him back to where ever it was he was living at the time. Two weeks later, they’d send a driver to pick him up again, keep him for 6 days in detox and send him back out again. The insurance company refused to pay for any more rehab, but Malvern was able to collect because the detox was “medically necessary”. He was there for detox after our divorce and I actually had a woman from Malvern call me at work to get a phone number to call for Cobra for him. I’m sure they’d fill out the form for him so they again could “collect” additional revenue off of him. He doesn’t have any money to pay for Cobra so they released him. Malvern is clearly in the business to make money off of individuals with a terrible disease and enable them continue in the disease so Malvern is able to continue to collect the insurance money off of those who are lucky enough to have it.

THE NURSES OVERALL WERE PRETTY HELPFUL WITH DETOX. BUT SOME OF THEM JUST DIDNT CARE TO HELP YOU WITH ANYTHING. YOU CAN LOCK YOUR CIGARETTES UP IN THE SAFE, BUT AT ANYTIME WITHIN THE ALOTTED TIME, ANY PATIENT CAN GO UP AND SAY, " I HAVE A PACK OF SO N SO" AND THE NURSE WILL JUST GIVE THEM OUT, WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING IF THEY REALLY ARE THE PATIENTS. THERE IS A HUGE AMOUNT OF THEFT WITHIN THE FACILITY, THERE IS NO DISCIPLINE WITH PATIENTS GOING IN AND OUT OF EACH OTHERS ROOMS, EXCEPT STAFF SAYING, DONT GO IN SOMEONE ELSES ROOM. YOU HAVE TO BEG COUNSELORS TO HAVE A ONE ON ONE MEETING, AND YOU STILL MAY HAVE TO WAIT A DAY OR SO. YOU CAN HARDLY EVER SLEEP, BECAUSE THE WAKE YOU UP AT 7AM, AND KEEP YOU UP TIL 11PM. YOU HAVE TO RUSH TO TAKE A SHOWER. THERE ARE ONLY 2 WASHERS AND DRYERS FOR 80 PEOPLE, THAT REALLY SMELL OF MOLD. THEY SAY YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE RAZORS, COLOGNES/PERFUMES, NAIL CLIPPERS, AND I HAD ALL THAT IN MY BAG, SO THEY DIDNT EVEN CHECK MY BAGS. THERE ARE PATIENTS THAT COME IN WITH DRUGS AND ARE SUPPOSE TO BE DETOXING BUT THEY ARE HIGH DURING GROUPS/MEETINGS. YOU CAN BRIBE ANY OF THE PEOPLE FROM THE TRANSITION HOUSE TO BRING YOU CAFFIENE, OR THE JANITORS WILL BUY YOU THINGS FROM WAWA. AND WHEN THE PATIENTS GO ON THE WAWA RUN, THEY BRING BACK CAFFIENE AND GO IN THE SIDE DOOR AND SELL IT TO OTHER PATIENTS FOR A HIGHER PRICE. PEOPLE HAVE VISITORS COMING UP THAT ARENT APPROVED THAT BRING CELL PHONES, DRUGS, AND ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT. THERE IS NO SECURITY CHECKS WHAT SO EVER. IT IS A COED FACILITY WITH MALE PATIENTS GOING TO THE FEMALES ROOMS TO HAVE SEX. THE JANITORS DO NOT CLEAN THE BATHROOMS PROPERLY THAT LEAD PEOPLE TO GET SICK FROM THE BACTERIA. THE FOOD IS DISGUSTING AND THE MENU IS THE SAME EVERY WEEK. THEY DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH BREAD BECAUSE PATIENTS STEAL IT AND TAKE IT TO THEIR ROOMS. ALSO, NEW PATIENTS MAY NOT EVEN HAVE A PILLOW BECAUSE SENIOR PATIENTS HAVE 2-4 PILLOWS IN THEIR ROOMS. THEY HAVE THE SAME GROUPS EVERY WEEK AND MEETINGS, SO YOU DONT REALLY LEARN TO MUCH AFTER THE 2ND WEEK. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE GOING TO MALVERN.
