I arrived at Marworth via a family intervention for alcohol abuse. I had been to two outpatient spa-like places which were non-12-step, and they were unhelpful. At Marworth the patients (and I mean patients-- everyone wears a hospital ID band) are immersed in 12-stepping. There are no outside books, papers or phones allowed. All phone calls are made at very public pay phones (no privacy) at prespecified times and under the supervision of a staff monitor. Lectures and groups go continuously from 845am to almost 10pm. The weekends are slower, and hope that you are not there for a holiday weekend as I was as on the holiday Monday there is basically little going on and the boredom is stifling. On the whole I found the staff caring but the counselors aloof, and condescending. The staff definitely infantalize the patients, and as the head counselor stated, "every day at Marworth is supposed to be uncomfortable". In that they succeed. The process is exhausting in its intensity. There is very little (an hour a week) individual counseling and this I find a MAJOR problem with the facility. There are also lectures by staff members that are ill-prepared. Many of these staffers have little more qualification than that they are recovering addicts. HOWEVER, constantly hearing the stories of the staffers and speakers and other patients allowed the idea that I was an alcoholic to start to creep into my brain. The truth is that when I got to Marworth I was very sick. I did not seize nor did I experience DTs or mental status changes (except while on Phenobarbital, used to prevent withdrawal seizures). However my body was a mess, and as the alcohol wore off, so was my coordination (not helped by the fact that I did not sleep through a single night at Marworth). But here is the thing-- I needed the tough approach. I needed immersion without dustraction. I HATED being there, but I NEEDED it. This does not excuse the lack of one-on-one care or the very uneven capabilities of the counselors. It does not excuse the paucity of treatment on the weekends. But I needed to step out of my comfortable world and go to work on my recovery. I am not a fervent AA-er. I do not believe in a higher power of any type, but I go to meetings. i go because they help to clear my head, and every now and again I pick up a kernel worth remembering. Marworth is not fun and cares little about how you deal with your real life having to be put on hold. But it creates an environment where, if you are an addict and you know, however grudgingly, that you need help, you can start the process to sobriety. One other detail-- more than half of the patients when I was there were heroin addicts/dealers-- they were all very young, and very immature, and many there as a bridge to a (shorter) jail time--this as a middle-aged patient I found very disruptive. So just know what to expect.

Just got back from Marworth. The place is great. It's a place for people who are serious about recovery. The emphasis is decidedly on the 12-step program with DBT skills taught as an adjunct. The building is very nice. It is neither too spartan and severe nor too luxurious and spa-like to be taken seriously. It is a comfortable and very supporting environment with wonderful and caring staff and a a diversity of patient personalities and backgrounds.

My wife was subjected to errors on the part of the nursing staff, in particular the evening med nurses. The issues were not addressed until I called repeatedly to get someone to address the issues. It took a week to get anyone to address the issue and once it was determined that mistakes were made, not much was done. What I found most appalling as a caring family member is the complete lack of respect or willingness to address issues.
