My father in-law was admitted into the ICU from the ER around 4am. At that time the 1st nurse was told clearly that my father in law did not speak or understand English and that he was currently in a lot of pain. The communication between the nurses was appalling. I left the hospital at 5am and called on his status at 9am. The 2nd nurse had no idea that my father in-law spoke no English nor that he was in pain. My father in-law was not provided pain medication for the pain he stated he had at 4am. The care in the ICU continued to be less than acceptable for the rest of that day until my husband and I showed up to speak with the nursing staff directly. The 3rd nurse took the time to actually listen to what was being said and finally assisted to get the care my father in-law needed. I feel that the experience as a whole was truly awful due to the fact the nurses could not even communicate between each other for information as important as if the patient can understand and speak English and also that the patient was in terrible pain. The lack of proper use of the hospitals interpreter’s services is also appalling. An 83 year old man had to lay in bed in pain from 4am until at least 3pm in the afternoon. This is completely unacceptable. I pray he never needs care at this hospital again.
